Skin care: so that incontinence does not cause skin problems

The skin of incontinence patients is sensitive and should be protected from urine and feces. Modern creams form a lipid-water barrier on the skin, helping maintain its natural protective function.

Healthy skin is very important for peoples’ wellbeing. But older people who need care are in particular highly susceptible to decubitus. To prevent decubitus ulcers and pressure sores, skin needs to be protected and nourished - this is even more important for persons suffering from incontinence.

Maintaining the acid mantle of the skin is important

The German nursing standard for the prevention of decubitus ulcers recommends protecting the skin from excessive exposure to water and body fluids, such as urine and feces, which can affect the skin’s natural protective layer, making it vulnerable and susceptible to pathogens. Modern creams and foams which cover the skin with a lipid-water barrier and prevent moisture ingress provide additional protection.

Clear products allow better inspection

Clear foams or creams (such as Menalind professional transparent skin protection cream) are especially helpful. They allow better visual inspection of skin irritation. Zinc paste, which dehydrates the skin and leaves a white film, as well as fat- and oil-based products such as milk fat and Vaseline, which clog the skin pores and inhibit the transfer of heat, are not suitable.

To sum up: regular use of modern skin protection products effectively improves the well-being of patients and nursing home residents.
